Four places, one island day

  1. Sanbangsan & Bomunsa Temple

    01

    Sanbangsan & Bomunsa Temple

    Lava Dome & Temple — South-West Coast · 45 min

Sanbangsan is the oldest thing you will see today — a 395 m lava dome on the south-west coast, dated by potassium-argon at roughly 700,000 to 800,000 years, which makes it one of the earliest pieces of Jeju still standing. It did not build as a cone. The lava was too thick to flow, so it piled up where it emerged and set into the shape of a bell, and its south face is now a wall of columnar joints and wind-hollowed rock rising as much as 200 m. The dome is a designated site of Jeju's UNESCO Global Geopark, and the plant community clinging to its cliffs is a provincial natural monument. The name means the mountain with a cave, after the sea cave partway up that south face, with a shrine inside it. This stop stays at the foot. The summit is closed for conservation, and the uphill walk to the cave shrine and entry to the Yongmeori shore are not part of the tour. What you visit is Bomunsa, the temple at the base, founded in 1969 and rebuilt over three years from 1998. In front of its main hall stands a five-storey stone pagoda holding thirty-three relics of the Buddha, with a tall Avalokitesvara figure beside it. The yard looks out over the south-west sea, and in spring the fields below the dome turn yellow with canola. There are steps at Bomunsa, and it is a working temple — give worshippers room.

  2. O'Sulloc Tea Fields & Museum

    O'Sulloc Tea Fields & Museum

Green Tea Fields — Seogwang · 40 min

Tea fields open the afternoon — rows of green tea on the Seogwang plantation in Andeok, with the O'Sulloc museum, café and shop set among them. The museum opened in 2001 as Korea's first devoted to tea; it is run by Amorepacific, whose founder first set out to plant tea on this volcanic ground in 1979, and the estate now produces about 700 tonnes of tea a year and draws around two million visitors. The main building is shaped after a teacup and was renovated in 2023. Entry is free. Forty minutes covers a stretch of the tea rows, the rooftop observatory — on a clear day it looks across to Hallasan, Sanbangsan and Songaksan — and the exhibition on the history of tea on the island. Indoors, the windows frame the fields and the gotjawal forest behind them. The café is the busiest part of the stop. Green tea ice cream and green tea roll cake are what most people queue for; tangerine and hallabong teas are the alternative. Drinks, desserts, tea classes and anything from the shop are paid separately.

  3. Camellia Hill

    03

    Camellia Hill

    Camellia Arboretum & Gardens · 60 min

Six thousand camellia trees grow here, in more than 500 varieties gathered from some 80 countries — a private arboretum near Seogwipo, grown over more than thirty years and widely described as the largest camellia garden in Asia. The grounds are laid out as themed woods — a European camellia wood, an Asia-Pacific one — threaded with hedged lanes, lawns and ponds. Admission is included. A full loop is about 1.5–2 km on flat paved paths, which fits the hour at an unhurried pace. What is actually in flower depends on when your ship calls: camellias are at their peak from late autumn through early spring, with cherry blossom and tulips in spring, hydrangeas in summer, and pink muhly and silver grass in autumn. Seasonal flowers are not guaranteed. The photograph most people come away with is the same one: a branch of camellia framed in one of the garden's small windows. Most of the garden is outdoors; the greenhouse, gallery and café are where you stand out of the rain. There is no lighting over the grounds, so on short or overcast days the gate can close earlier than the posted hour.

  4. Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market

    04

    Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market

Traditional Market — Lunch Stop · 60 min

Seogwipo's oldest market closes the Gangjeong route, about 20 minutes from the port and an unhurried hour before the drive back to the ship. It opened in 1960 and is still the largest permanent market in the city: roughly 200 shops and 140 stalls along an arcade of about 620 m. The roof over that whole length retracts automatically, so the market stays walkable whatever the weather is doing. Stalls open from 07:00, and most are shut by around 17:00. The island's food is the reason to come. Hallabong and tangerines are stacked at the entrances; black pork turns up as dumplings, grilled skewers, roll-katsu and jerky; omegi tteok rice cakes and tangerine hotteok are the standard snacks; and the fish counters sell okdom and hairtail landed on the south coast. Hallabong soft ice cream is the one most people photograph. A number of shops keep seating set aside so you can eat where you bought. Lunch is at your own expense. Set against Dongmun Market in Jeju City this one is smaller and quieter, and an hour covers it at a walk rather than a march.
